To prepare Papamoa and surrounding areas for growth, Tauranga City Council (TCC) is upgrading the culverts at various locations along the Wairakei drain. TCC engaged RZG Construction to deliver 1600m diameter stormwater culverts through Longview Drive, to improve the capacity of the existing stormwater network.
Through effective community engagement, we ensured the project caused minimal impact for residents in this busy urban area. Traffic was diverted and safe pedestrian access was maintained throughout the project, with no negative complaints received from residents.
We worked proactively with local iwi, archaeologists and ecologists to ensure no taonga were impacted by the works.
Stormwater works present unique environmental challenges, however by drawing on our knowledge, skills and resources, we were able to adhere to strict regulations and protect the environment.
950mm-deep ground improvements were completed two metres below the water table, with no quality issues.
We undertook excavation dewatering with extensive planning and careful delivery. Our team pumped dewatering water through a settlement container before discharging it back into the stream.
We diverted live sewer and water to cater for the new culvert alignment while protecting these existing services.
In early January, extreme rain and Cyclone Gabrielle both impacted the Bay of Plenty, causing elevated water levels in the adjacent stream and ground water table. RZG Construction quickly redeployed pumps from our internal dewatering fleet to eliminate any effects to the project.
RZG has a track record of delivering projects on time, to budget, and to the highest standard – and our work on Longview Drive was no exception. 1600m diameter culverts were laid to 6-12mm tolerances, and roads were re-opened on schedule after our in-house pavement and footpath crews completed reinstatement works.
We built a successful relationship with TCC throughout the project. TCC expressed positive feedback on our work, and awarded our team further work on the Wairakei Culvert Upgrades.
