Bayfair to Baypark

Every day, nearly 40,000 vehicles travel along the Baypark to Bayfair Link on State Highway 2 in Mount Maunganui. It’s a busy route with a diverse range of users, and an important arterial corridor. The Bay Link project, commissioned by Waka Kotahi, will improve safety by separating local traffic from the state highway and rail corridor, provide safer walking and cycling connections, and complete the State Highway 2 Eastern Corridor for the Bay of Plenty.

The project involves building two flyovers. One flyover will take State Highway 29A over the railway line and the Te Maunga intersection and the second flyover will take State Highway 2 traffic up and over the Maunganui-Girven intersection. As part of the project the existing Maunganui-Girven Road intersection will also be upgraded, the Te Maunga roundabout replaced with an elevated interchange, the Truman Lane roundabout improved, and safer walking and cycling connections will be provided between Baypark and Bayfair.

RZG Construction was engaged by CPB Contractors to deliver pipework, stormwater pipes, water mains, sewer mains and sheet piling for this complex project.

Our team demonstrated the skills and experience to deliver for our clients and stakeholders while navigating a range of challenges – working to tight timeframes, with teams in multiple areas across the construction site, and with extensive traffic management, live services, and environmental considerations.

Laying 1,350 diameter piping across busy Manganui Road required extensive planning and coordination, and careful execution. We worked closely with stakeholders to design and deliver a traffic management plan and to ensure minimal disruption to traffic flow, including three months of nightwork.

This project also required RZG Construction to meet strict environmental regulations relating to dewatering in an urban environment.

To ensure our team had the skills and qualifications to deliver the work, we invested in upskilling in a range of areas including sheetpile installation, confined spaces, and the Connexis Pipelaying Certification.

Works included:

  • Laying 13400mm diameter pipe across Manganui Road under live traffic
  • Laying 3.3km of stormwater pipe (300mm to 1500mm diameter)
  • Installing 540mm diameter water main and 900mm diameter sewer main
  • Sheet piling
  • Large diameter culvert installation
  • Live connections to existing infrastructure
  • Extensive traffic management planning and implementation
  • Environmental management
  • Stakeholder management
